BEGINNING JAZZ MODULE: Lesson 5

Lesson 5 – Navigating 2-5-1 Chord Patterns

I wrote Two Fives Don’t Make a One specifically for this course. The melody closely and only follows the modes that pertain to each chord- Ionian, Dorian, and Mixolydian. Ionian is built on the first scale degree of a major, Dorian on the 2nd, and Mixo on the 5th scale degree. Notice how the melody in the 2nd half of the tune only goes down a half step on some notes. When you play along with the backing track and try improvising try using this technique. Play an idea in the first half then play the same idea in the second half while only changing the notes that don’t work to the nearest notes that do work.

“Annie and her band did a fabulous job of engaging students from all ages of our string feeder area elementary through high school. The students and audience members loved the band’s performance and the high energy they brought to our concert! The students had so much fun learning new songs by rote and the pieces were well-arranged for a variety of levels of playing.”
