Playing vibrato is the process of rocking the hand/wrist in order to create a waver in pitch. Some people think of it as accessing a quarter tone below and then above the note. The are many opinions about vibrato and how to achieve it, what it should look like and the steps you must master beforehand. For our purposes, we will accomplish this as simply as we can. You also need to have a relaxed left hand, wrist and thumb. Here is an exercise designed to loosen the hand in preparation for this hugely cool fiddle technique. Try slow and relaxed vibrato on the dotted half notes. Start slow and loose and you will gain the strength to increase in speed over time.
