Shady Grove primarliy uses notes on the D string. These note names are D1=E, HD2=F sharp, and D3=G with the next note in the scale being open A. Consider writing these notes into the next two exercises and under the tech checks for the next few tunes. That way, by the time the fingering is not given, you will know what the notes are. As you add each finger, watch your left thumb, it should not support the fiddle. In fact, the thumb should stay pretty low on the fingerboard, allowing the fingers to curve over the fingerboard in relaxed arch. I sometimes mark the thumb placement for my students as it is hard to remember in the beginning. If you are using tapes, make sure your fingers are on the tapes and if not, listen for correct intonation.
